Maya Barnstone

(she/her)

@mayaspaintings

Born in Washington state, I spent the first 14 years of my life in the US, staying with family in Greece three months out of every year. I’ve drawn a lot of inspiration from America and particularly my summers in Greece. In 2012, I moved to Australia and attended Newtown high school of the performing arts, where I discovered painting. I graduated high school in 2016 and went straight into a Bachelors degree of fine arts at the National Art School where I majored in painting. I’m now two years out of school and painting every day.

Oil or acrylic? Have you tried both?

Acrylic! I painted with both throughout art school, but my blocked colours and layers upon layers of paint only works with a fast drying medium ie. acrylic paint. I also stopped painting on canvas about five years ago in second year, I paint on handmade wooden  boards built by my father.

Commissioned | 90cm x 90cm | 2021

I don’t sell prints or remakes, there is only one original of each painting and I’ve always liked it that way! I love doing commissions for people as well it’s always fun trying to capture someone else’s imagination. :)

What triggered your interest in interiors and diner-style spaces?

 I grew up in the United States, my mother is from New York and I’ve spent a lot of time visiting family in the big city. On my most recent trip about three years ago, I found myself in a diner at four in the morning after a night out in the Lower east side. Sitting eating eggs, bacon, toast and drinking coffee with my brother and his friend Lorenzo, I remember the gold and green 1930s 24hour diner like it were yesterday. With gold and green tiles climbing all the way up into the kitchen, white columns jointed throughout the old, glamorous interior. As soon as I came back to Sydney I started painting diners from my imagination.

What themes do you pursue and explore in your painting?

 I wouldn’t say I pursue any themes, as all my paintings are from my imagination, however I do love an ‘event’. This could be a ball I imagined, a boxing game, a pool gathering, a rendezvous of sorts. Anything in which a group of people come collected and enjoy drinks and each other’s company.
