Light Subjects

Deliberate control and spontaneity collide in my shots. The photos I take are visually duplicitous, simultaneously staged and extemporaneous. Chaos is framed within electric architectural elements. When my frames contain human subjects, their expressions are tranquil or hidden in darkness, suggesting an unending loneliness within the diaphanous details of the city. These shadows fragment my subjects, telling stories by concealing some details and drawing attention to others. Human subjects are portrayed within complex environments; often their presence is obscured by the resplendent details that I can’t help but see in prosaic urban places. The relationships between light and shadow weave narratives that run as deep as the relationships between people and the environment they inhabit.

Portraiture is a continuation of my study. Expanding upon my portraiture centring human subjects to include not people, but ‘light-subjects’. A light subject is the visual manifestation of the relationship between light and space. It is the moment that occurs when light touches a physical object and the ‘object’ that the light itself creates. The light becomes a body of its own when it interacts with the environment. Light creates abstraction, reflection, refraction, depth, shadow and, when the camera is obscured, it projects confusion.

This is an exploration of what a light subject is and what they are to me; my work is a visual collection of light-subjects showcasing their existence in the physical world and the interactions they have with other objects.
