A more perfect match could not be imagined! Melbourne-based folk artist Georgia State Line and Eilish Gilligan have teamed up for a glorious remix of Georgia’s song ‘Every Time’. Although their respective work is different, the pairing makes complete sense—it’s cool, dynamic and fresh. We got an exclusive interview with the pair and we decided to have some fun and let them ask each other the questions.

Can you each explain briefly your history as an artist, any highlights?
Eilish: I've been releasing music under my own name since 2017, toured the country and collaborated with some amazing people. I'm currently working on my debut album and excited to debut some of the tracks live as a showcasing artist at BIGSOUND this year.
Georgia: I've been playing as Georgia State Line alongside the band since around 2017. During this time I've released an EP and an album (via Cheatin' Hearts Records/ Spunk!) and played around AUS alongside some artists that I truly admire. A recent highlight was finally hosting an album launch show for our album In Colour that was Auslan accessible with interpreters. I was also able to facilitate the venue undergoing Deaf Awareness and basic Auslan training too. It felt incredibly special to create a space where people could comfortably come together and just enjoy music in its simplest form. Plus, even more amazing to help allow future accessible events to take place at the venue a little easier.
Georgia, how did this come about, were you a fan of Eilish’s music?
Georgia: I've been a long-time admirer of Eilish's music (and in writing in general). I knew I wanted the track remixed, so I just thought to reach out and see if Eilish would be interested in adding her own ear and flair to it- and she was.
Do you remember when you first heard ‘Every Time’? What made you want to remix this song?
Eilish: There's something dark and edgy about this song, particularly the chorus, that I just fell in love with upon first listen. In particular I think Georgia has crafted such a stunning chorus in Every Time - the harmonies, the original arrangement, I just loved it all. I was inspired by all of this and excited to explore my own version with the remix!
What is something that you admire about each other?
Georgia: I admire the way Eilish operates within the industry. She's an incredibly hard working and inspired individual, and I think these are really important values that naturally impact others around her, especially artists looking to role models on what their careers could be like when wanting to do things their way.
Eilish: I think Georgia is a fabulous songwriter, with a clever knack for catchy and affecting choruses. She is an idiosyncratic songwriter and that is really special - remixing this song gave me a great insight into her writing process!
What moments in your careers are you most proud of?
Eilish: There are lots of things that I'm proud of but I think I am proudest of the fact that I have sustained a successful career in the Australian music industry through a lot of rough and topsy-turvy times! I feel so grateful for the creative and fascinating life I get to lead on my own terms and I think I'll always be really proud of the fact I built this for myself through a bunch of hard work.
Georgia: Myself and the band have played a couple shows out in Meeniyan at the Meeniyan Town Hall there, opening for Eilen Jewell and Justin Townes Earle in the past. Playing this venue is always so reaffirming as to how special it is to play music and be within the community. There is always a large listening audience - you could almost hear a pin drop. This feeling of connectivity between artist and audience is something that I'll never take for granted. Before a show the volunteers of the venue also cater for the headlining artist and the support, and everyone sits down together to eat and chat. There is no ego and it's like the great equalizer.
What was the experience of this collab like for you?
Eilish: It was amazing - Georgia allowed me a lot of creative freedom with this remix and I really appreciate that. The original version of the song is so stunning already, so I wanted to keep the integrity of the song alive while adding a few different elements so I could highlight parts of the song-writing that I really loved - i.e. I love the chorus so much, I wanted to build a textural world around it that would highlight that beautiful vocal melody.
Georgia: This process was truly fun. Although I have my roots firmly placed within the country music sphere, I am highly influenced by pop-writing sensibilities, and I love for a song to hook you in and be stuck in your head. I listen to a lot of different music in my spare time, including A LOT of pop. I loved the way Eilish produced this track with the use of the vocoder and minimalist production at the start that builds throughout. I think for a lot of artists sometimes you can feel torn between creating what you like listening to (pulling from a range of genres) versus creating what you've become known for, or what might come out more naturally when sitting down to write. This experience fulfilled my want for dipping my toes more into pop-production, and I really hope to do more of this in the future - because it's fun!
Could you see yourselves doing something together again in the future?
Georgia: Absolutely! I'd love to write together one day or even pick Eilish's brain about all things about being a producer.
Eilish: I hope so! I loved working with Georgia and would love to remix another of her beautiful songs, or maybe have a co-writing session together one day!
