MaggZ is a Naarm-based movement and multidisciplinary artist, specialised in waacking - a freestyle dance originated in 1970s LA from the LGBTQIA + community, predominantly involving arm movements. Traversing amongst dance battles, live performances, installations, interdisciplinary collaborations, creative directions and digital creations, MaggZ aspires to explore the possibilities of art and creativity whilst to honour the unique being of self and others.
The 'rebirth' project was part of the exhibition opening at Honey Bones Gallery in December 2021. The term "rebirth" inspired me to look into the notion of birth, the physical, emotional, spiritual complexity and significance one shall continuously unfold throughout their lifespan - "rebirth as birth". The interconnection between rebirth and birth also extends beyond the human-centric lens in examining the relatedness between humans and non-humans; as such, prompting to decentralise human presence and further engages with approaches that foreground heterogeneity amongst all beings.
HOW HAS YOUR PRACTICE CHANGED OVER TIME?
I've been dancing pretty much my whole life, started off with ballet when I was 6, it never really spoke to me as a child. I encountered waacking in 2014, I've never felt so alive prior to that and never been so certain about pursuing something wholeheartedly. Now moving onto 8 years as a movement artist, my practice has diversified from entering street dance freestyle battles, into multimedia exploration, creative and movement direction, as well as interdisciplinary collaborations.
IS THERE AN EMOTIONAL CONNECTION TO THE WORK YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE?
Nostalgia - the term "rebirth" almost immediately brought me back home (Kunming, Yunnan, China), where everything spring mum and I would go to the park that's 10 minutes walk from our apartment, to look at cherry blossoms. I remembered how resistant I've been every single year, being a bratty teenager, yet always ended up appreciating the flowers and mum's presence. The direction of the photos is inspired by nostalgia, as well as how has nostalgia grown in me - a deeply vulnerable yet resilient presence as a female-identifying person living on stolen land.
WHAT IS NEXT FOR YOU?
Well, this is always a tricky question to answer these days hey in the COVID era :p
Ideally, as well as to continually pursue my practice - movement, live performances, physical and digital productions, I will be bringing more curations that foreground multimedia and experimental art in Naarm with an open space for dialogues and exploration. Hopefully going on an "Australia" tour by the end of the year, and start traveling for work next year
Not so ideally if anything happens due to the pandemic (which is most of the time lol), I summarise my aspiration / virtue into the following - stillness, aliveness, persistence, patience.
