What is your work about & what medium do you use?
Much of my practice stems from my passion for Interior Design and a love I have for finding unique interior pieces, designed by a range of international designers and local creatives. I spend much of my time creating and designing pieces that are based off designs and objects I’ve found and ones I’ve created. My primary practice is my drawing of super cute illustrations of interiors in a playful and engaging cartoon form. They are playful example of scenes and designs that come together in my imagination. In the style of these drawings, I primarily use Procreate on an iPad Pro which I find to be a really fantastic device for drawing digitally.
How was your practice changed over time?
My practice has progressed and developed as I have become inspired by more artists and designers over the years. My drawings began as real fantasy lands that I was able to manifest, create and manipulate. More recently, they have become more realistic, presenting liveable spaces and realities. I think this change came about mostly from me genuinely enjoying my creating objects I had thought of in spaces I could actually see myself living in. Developing how I wanted my own space to look in my apartment also encouraged me to keep drawing and designing. But more recently, the designing of these spaces and collaborating with local creators has been a fantastic way for me to build relationships in the industry and have led to some exciting projects that I am keen to be working on at the moment (but can’t reveal yet!).
What is next for you?
I am really excited about what is next for me as I am teaming up with some local businesses. My drawings will feature for them and some creators are people I have admired for a while! It’s such a joy to see things in cartoon form and I’m excited to see my work in collaboration with them.
How did the project come to be?
My projects all began from my fantasies- playful corners of my mind where I wanted to create little fantasy interiors of how I would organise and design spaces I would create. The drawings seemed to develop more so in lockdown as I had the time to develop ideas. I also used it as a tool to think how I would lay out my apartment as I was moving out of home. In the apartment I was in at the time, I didn’t have the space to arrange furniture so my drawings became a way I could draw fun and playful rooms and express my love for interiors. In all my drawings I aim to combine my own made up furniture and combine it with local creators who inspire me.
Is there an emotional connection to your work?
I wouldn’t say there is an emotional connection to my work but I guess that I just never really see it as work or as a chore. My connection to my work is more that it is something that I enjoy and an outlet for me to unload all the designs that come to me in my head. They help me relax and enable me to create and design in a period of isolation and restriction.
Where can the viewer see more of your work?
You can see more of my work on my Instagram @ooliviawalker. It is a constant stream of my designs and my finding of unique pieces from all corners of the internet. I use my platform to find interestingly aesthetic designer pieces and share them with my audience.
