Jag

Alice Ruby McDonald (she/her)

Musician and Poet Jag is a truly divine artist ready to transcend space and time.

There is something about Jag that I just can’t quite put into words. So I can only start off by telling a story.

Each time I see Jag play, the whole room is transcended to something I can’t describe. I took my good friend Jack to one of her recent shows, opening for Barefoot Spacemen at the Colour Club, and we shared pleasantries with Jag before the show. She’s bubbly and sweet but little did my friend Jack know ( and later I would learn its because Jag “is a Gemini”) as soon as she opened her mouth the blues takes over.

Two seconds into her set, Jack turned to me and said “Now I did not expect that.” Beyond this kind and caring girl there is a raw, earthy grit that tells a story straight to the soul and shakes the earth with each rich tone that she oozes out of her so effortlessly.

Jag found her spirituality from the book ‘The Artists Way’ by Julia Cameron in 2019 after feeling lost in a uni course she didn’t want to be in. Since then she found her artistic calling and has been praying and meditating - creating music that is true to her own blessed spirituality. With influences of blues legends, rock and jazz, Jag’s writing speaks in it’s own language that is unique to her and a direct message from the soul.

“It’s something between God and I. When I step away from the mic, it’s for God… at it’s root it’s a very spiritual thing, I just want to go inside.”

Her debut and current release ‘Satisfied’ is accompanied by an electrifying music video. It is so abundantly clear that creative artistry is Jag’s most righteous path she will ever take. ‘Satisfied’ features my favourite characteristic to Jag’s performances. It’s those deathly wails. The passion and energy in Jag’s voice is basically what I’ve coined as spine-chilling. It’s so raw it feels like an out-of-body experience. I’m so enticed to see what happens next for Jag and her band guitarist Nikko Morganlowe, bassist Mathew Farry and Nathan Power on drums.

Jag’s next upcoming show will be S.E.M festival at The Shed, Skatepark on Saturday 30th April.
