What is your work about & what medium do you use?
My Nefarious: More Than Meets The Eye collection is a series of wearable artworks with a heavy focus of handmade textiles and abstract fashion pattern making. The works themselves act as a visual story of the three key stages of the persona that is tagged ‘Villain’.
There’s the evil stage, the breakdown stage & the misunderstood stage.
The collection is a reflection of society, mental health and the way that social norms have made reading identities so critical.
How did your project come to be?
Nefarious was a continuation on my analysis of how lived experience can affect ones inner & outer personas. I’ve always kind of hyper analysed my own life, and the lives of others to build up this internal encyclopaedia of human behaviour - no idea why, but human behaviour, thoughts and actions fascinate me.
Nefarious came from my own analysis of my darker inner self as well as funnily enough an obsession with Britney Spears. 2021 was a huge year for Britney and her story and very public battle with mental health & the press around it was a massive inspiration behind the story being told in this collection.
How has your practice changed over time?
SOOOO to be honest I always was OBSESSED with colour and wild textiles. I grew up with a textile designer mother, so it came naturally to me. Although, I learnt through my own developing of designs. I wasn’t so into flat textile or fashion norms. My designs always broke away from the body and ended up being all over extremity. I guess my mind itself is a bit all over the place, and through the 2 years I studied online over covid, I really let my mind take control of my design direction. This led to wildness and uniqueness, I could never have gauged back when I was younger. But I do think young Tess had this within her, she just didn’t have the understanding of design to map out those ideas.
Is there an emotional connection to the work you would like to share?
Emotionally I am connected to everything I create. My works always tell my own stories as well as others. My mental state is always reflected in what I create. I’m not afraid to hide the things that are in my mind. I’ve also grown up holding the dream of succeeding in fashion close to my heart. It was my driving factor throughout my life. I’ve had ups and downs, changes of heart here and there, but I was born as a creative and have always come back to this dream. So basically, everything I create comes from the heart. Both the stories within and overall passion has led me to create the fashions I do.
Where can the viewer see more of your work?
I am a masssiveeeee insta gal! I have TikTok & a website but Instagram is where you can find me, my work and my day to day antics. I’m very transparent on my Instagram. I guess that ties in well with the lived experience side of my story telling. My life story is documented on Insta alongside my portfolio of work.
Check me out! @te.double.ss
What is next for you?
Next for me… well that’s the big question! I’ve just started a full-time management role at a clothing store, but on the side, I aim to continuously pursue my own artistic exploration. Continuing my analysis on the human experience through fashion and textiles. I hope to score a design team role sometime soon too! Or a costuming role as I love theatre. As long as I keep creative, and my fashion dreams alive, that’s the aim for 2022 (as I’m on a gap year between my bachelor and honours degree). I also want to create more fashion related social media content as I love content creation.
